Table Tennis Keeps Inactive Adults 60+ Active Long-Term
A 24-week German study found that introducing recreational sports like table tennis to previously inactive adults over 60 led to significant fitness gains and 97% long-term adherence.
Getting inactive older adults to start exercising is difficult. Getting them to stick with it long-term is harder. A new German study shows that recreational sports like table tennis can crack both problems.
The research, published in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living in 2026, tested a low-threshold exercise concept on 161 healthy but sporting-inactive adults over 60. After six months of combining fitness training with introductory classes in recreational sports like karate, table tennis, handball, and archery, 97% of participants continued regular training after the intervention. After 12 months, 87% had joined local sports clubs.
The Study Design
Researchers at Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg recruited 161 older adults (68.23 ± 4.47 years, 66% female) who had no regular weekly sports participation before the study. They were divided into an intervention group (129 participants) and a control group (32 participants).
The intervention consisted of two weekly 90-minute sessions for 24 weeks. Each session combined multicomponent fitness training with introductory classes to recreational sports. The sports were intentionally varied to maintain engagement and social connection.
Physical abilities were measured at six time points: baseline, intermediate, post-intervention, and follow-ups at 4 weeks, 6 months, and 12 months. Tests covered maximal grip strength, upper and lower body strength, motor reaction time, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness.
Physical Fitness Improvements
The intervention group showed significant gains across multiple fitness domains. Lower-limb strength improved substantially. In the 30-second chair-stand test, the time-by-group interaction was statistically significant (χ²(1.84) = 5.127, p < .001), with a moderate effect size (ΔR² = .150). This test measures how many times a person can stand up from a seated position in 30 seconds, a key indicator of leg strength and independence.
Cardiovascular fitness also improved. The PWC130 test, which measures power output at a heart rate of 130 beats per minute, showed a within-group effect size of η² = .25 with p = .017. Higher PWC130 values indicate better aerobic fitness.
Smaller but meaningful gains appeared in other areas. Muscular endurance measured by bicep curl improved (p < .001, r = .06). Motor reaction time, tested with a drop-bar apparatus, also improved (p = .040, r = .03). Flexibility measured by sit-and-reach showed gains as well (r = .03).
The study found sex-specific advantages. Women showed greater endurance gains than men, though both groups benefited overall.
Sustainability: The Real Breakthrough
The most striking result was adherence. Traditional exercise programs often see dropout rates of 30-50% within six months. This program achieved the opposite.
After the 24-week intervention ended, 97% of participants continued regular training on their own. This suggests that the combination of fitness training and exposure to multiple sports created intrinsic motivation rather than dependency on the program structure.
Social integration proved crucial. 77% of participants joined local sports clubs immediately after the intervention. After 12 months, that number grew to 87%. Joining a club provides ongoing opportunities to play sports like table tennis, reinforcing the habit through community and scheduled play.
Participants reported increased social activity (40% more) and higher subjective well-being. They received positive feedback from their social environment, creating a reinforcing loop that supported continued participation.
Why Table Tennis Works for Older Adults
Among the recreational sports introduced, table tennis offers unique advantages for previously inactive older adults. The low-impact nature means reduced injury risk compared to contact sports or high-impact activities. The sport can be modified easily for different ability levels and physical limitations.
Table tennis provides simultaneous cardiovascular exercise, coordination training, and social interaction. Unlike repetitive gym workouts, each point in table tennis is slightly different, engaging cognitive processes like anticipation, decision-making, and rapid reaction. This combination of physical and cognitive challenge makes the sport engaging rather than monotonous.
The sport is also highly adaptable. Players can stand or sit, adjust the pace, and modify equipment. This inclusivity allows people with varying mobility levels to participate together, reducing feelings of isolation or inability.
The Low-Threshold Approach
The program deliberately used a low-threshold approach. This means minimal barriers to entry: no expensive equipment, no intimidating fitness tests, no requirement for prior athletic experience. Recreational sports like table tennis are accessible and relatively inexpensive compared to many other activities.
The social embedding proved essential. Participants exercised together, learned sports together, and formed connections. When the structured program ended, they had both the skills and the relationships to continue independently.
Practical Implications
For older adults considering starting exercise, the findings suggest three practical takeaways. First, variety matters more than intensity. The program succeeded by exposing participants to multiple sports rather than prescribing one specific exercise regimen.
Second, social connection is critical. The transition to independent exercise worked because participants formed relationships during the program. Group activities, whether club play or informal meetups, provide accountability and enjoyment.
Third, sustainability is achievable. The 97% adherence rate shows that with the right approach, exercise habits can stick even in previously inactive adults over 60. The key is creating an experience that people enjoy enough to continue voluntarily.
Limitations and Context
The study was a non-randomized controlled trial rather than a randomized controlled trial, which introduces some potential bias. Participants self-selected into the intervention group, though researchers attempted to match the control group on key characteristics.
The study also relied on self-reported activity after the intervention period. Future research could use objective measures like accelerometers to track actual exercise behavior.
The program was conducted in Germany with a predominantly white European population. Cultural factors around sports participation may differ in other countries and communities.
Comparison to Other Approaches
Many exercise programs for older adults focus on single modalities like walking, swimming, or strength training. This study took a different approach by combining general fitness training with exposure to multiple sports. The sustainability results suggest this multi-sport approach may be superior for long-term adherence.
The program also differed from clinical rehabilitation programs by targeting healthy but inactive adults rather than those with specific medical conditions. This fills an important gap in public health by reaching people who are not yet experiencing functional decline but are at risk due to inactivity.
